Find Your Partner’s Perfect Ring Size Without Them Knowing

Planning a surprise proposal is exciting but it also comes with a big challenge: how do you find your partner’s finger size without spoiling the surprise?

Choosing the right size matters, not just for comfort, but to make sure you’re not so far off the mark that a ring remake is necessary. Luckily, there are ways to discover their size without them ever suspecting a thing.

“Avoid tracing the ring on paper. While it may seem like a quick fix, it’s far too inaccurate and can result in the wrong size.”

1. Borrow a Ring They Already Wear

The most tried-and-true method is to borrow a ring your partner already wears on their ring finger. If they have one, discreetly take it to a jeweller to be measured. If that’s not possible, press it gently into soap or clay to capture the size before returning it without them noticing.

Avoid tracing the ring on paper. While it may seem like a quick fix, it’s far too inaccurate and can result in the wrong size.

2. Ask a Trusted Friend or Family Member

Sometimes a best friend, sibling, or parent will know your partner’s size. If they don’t, you can enlist their help. Ask them if they can take your partner “window shopping” for jewellery and casually suggest trying on rings.

3. Compare Fingers

Slip one of their rings onto your own finger and mark where it stops. A jeweller can then use this as a guide to estimate the correct size.

4. Use a Ring Sizer at Home

If you want to get a little creative, order a plastic ring sizer and measure one of their rings when they’re not around. Some jewellers even let you borrow a ring sizing stick to take home and return it after you’ve measured the size.

5. Go a Half Size Up or Down

Resizing is possible, but not on all ring styles. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to go slightly larger so the ring will still fit during the proposal. A small adjustment can usually be made later without compromising the design.

Keep in mind that resizing beyond two sizes can be a problem. Always ask your jeweller whether your chosen ring style can handle resizing both up and down by more than two sizes before you commit.

6. Make It a Game

Turn it into a playful moment without giving anything away. For example, while shopping together, stop by a market stall or boutique that sells fashion rings. Encourage your partner to try some on “just for fun,” and quietly take note of which ones fit best. Avoid chunky or oversized rings — instead, choose something with a similar width to a typical engagement ring band for the most accurate sizing. Slip it onto your own finger and mark where it stops, or make a mental note. Later, compare that ring to a size chart or bring it to a jeweller for measurement.

Best Ring Styles for Surprise Proposals

If you’re buying a ring without knowing the exact size, keep the design practical. Plain band styles or simple solitaire settings are best, because they can be resized with minimal fuss.

Avoid eternity rings (with diamonds all the way around) or designs with diamonds set on the shoulders. Resizing these can compromise the integrity of the band, loosen stones, or in some cases require the ring to be remade — leaving you out of pocket unless your jeweller has agreed in advance. If you’re considering a more intricate style, ask the jeweller to put it in writing on your receipt that they will remake or resize it free of charge if it doesn’t fit.

Best of luck!

At the end of the day, a proposal is about love, not perfection. Even if the ring needs a small adjustment later, the magic of the moment will stay with you both forever.
